At Krull Clinic, our therapists may use a variety of modalities to enhance strength, relaxation, or healing of muscles. Modalities include:
Ultrasound is a treatment that utilizes high or low frequency sound waves that are then transmitted to surrounding tissues and blood supply. This deep penetrating treatment causes warming of deep tissues and musculature. This allows the tissues to relax and is helpful for alleviating muscle tightness and spasms, reducing inflammation, and promotes tissue healing.
Frozen gel packs may be used by the physical therapist to help reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling. This is accomplished through constriction of the blood vessels in the area.
The physical therapist may choose electrical stimulation as part of your treatment program. Through electrodes placed on the skin, an electrical current can create different effects, depending on desired results. The current will affect a single muscle or a group of muscles, recruiting the appropriate muscle fibers, to assist with muscle strengthening and reduction of inflammation. It may also be used to promote muscle relaxation and pain reduction.
